Hurricane Grace kills 8 including children in Mexico

Hurricane Grace killed at least eight people, including five children from the same family, as it tore through eastern Mexico Saturday, causing flooding, mudslides and damage to homes and businesses.

The storm made landfall in Mexico for a second time near Tecolutla in Veracruz state as a major Category Three storm with winds of 125 miles (200 kilometers) per hour.

It later fizzled out as it moved inland over the central highlands, but not before causing widespread damage.

In the Veracruz state capital, Xalapa, streets were turned into muddy brown rivers.

Seven people died there and one more in the city of Poza Rica, Veracruz Governor Cuitlahuac Garcia told a news conference.

The victims included a mother and five of her children, who were buried when a hillside collapsed on their small home.

« I heard a bang on the roof and I went out to look, » said their father Adan Moreno, who witnessed the tragedy.

« I heard the earth collapsing. The hill was swept away and they were all down there — my wife and six children, » he told AFP, his voice breaking.

He dug through the mud with the help of relatives but only one child was pulled out alive.

His wife and five other children, including a two-week-old baby girl, did not survive.

– ‘It’s destroyed’ –

The streets of Tecolutla, home to about 24,000 people, were littered with fallen trees, signs and roof panels.

Esteban Dominguez’s beachside restaurant was reduced to rubble.

« It was many years’ effort, » he said.

« Over there was my house, but it’s destroyed. I’m left with no roof or furniture, » he said.

Many homes in the region were left without electricity.

Grace dissipated as it churned inland, drenching Mexico City, but could develop into a new cyclone next week in the Pacific, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

The Mexican authorities remained on alert due to the threat of rivers overflowing and landslides, mainly in Veracruz.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

Nearly 8,000 civil defense members, soldiers and electricity board workers had been put on standby ready to tackle the aftermath of the storm, he said on Friday night.

Authorities in Veracruz state said they had prepared 200 storm shelters and urged residents to hunker down in safe places.

They closed most highways in Veracruz, which is crossed by numerous rivers.

– Fishermen affected –

In preparation for the storm, workers along the coast boarded up windows to protect stores, fishermen brought their boats ashore and residents secured their homes after stocking up on canned food and water.

« We will spend many days without fishing — almost a week, » said Isabel Pastrana Vazquez, head of Veracruz’s federation of fisheries cooperatives.

« About 35,000 fishermen will be affected because we can’t go out, » he said.

In Casitas, a small tourist town on the coast, fisherman Domingo Hernandez said the roof had been ripped off his home.

« The whole sheet was blown off. I was there holding it, » he said, expressing relief that his boat was not damaged too.

The hurricane had already lashed Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula earlier in the week, forcing thousands of tourists to hunker down in shelters but blowing through with no loss of life.

Trump warns of new U.S. strikes on Iran next week

The president of United States, Donald Trump, said in an interview broadcast Thursday that American forces plan to launch intense attacks on Iranian targets next week, marking what would be the third wave of strikes since the conflict began.

“We’re going to hit them very hard next week,” Trump told Fox News Radio.

The current conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched an offensive that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The strike triggered a broader regional war that has shaken global energy markets and led to missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region.

The escalation has raised concerns among international observers about the potential for further instability in the Middle East and its impact on global oil supplies.

Canada a enregistré en février sa plus forte perte d’emplois en quatre ans, avec un taux de chômage atteignant 6,7 %, soit environ 83 900 postes supprimés, selon des données rapportées par Bloomberg.

D’après l’organisme national Statistics Canada, la majorité des pertes concerne des emplois à temps plein dans le secteur privé.

Ce résultat dépasse les prévisions des économistes interrogés par Bloomberg, qui tablaient sur un taux de chômage de 6,6 % et sur la création d’environ 10 000 emplois pour la période.

Depuis le début de l’année 2026, les Canadiens ont déjà perdu plus de 100 000 emplois à temps plein, ce qui souligne le ralentissement du marché du travail.

Pour l’économiste Brendon Bernard, de la plateforme de recherche d’emploi Indeed Canada, les perspectives restent préoccupantes.

Parallèlement, le dollar canadien (CAD) a reculé de 0,4 % face au dollar américain (USD), atteignant un plus bas quotidien de 1,3696 CAD pour 1 USD vendredi matin.

Trump évite de répondre sur une possible prise de l’île iranienne de Kharg

Le président des États-Unis, Donald Trump, a évité de répondre aux questions concernant une éventuelle occupation de l’île de Kharg, après l’annonce du crash d’un avion ravitailleur américain en Irak, qui a coûté la vie à six militaires américains.

Washington a affirmé que l’accident n’était pas dû à un tir ennemi, bien qu’un groupe armé proche de Iran ait revendiqué la responsabilité de l’incident.

Avec ces décès, le bilan des soldats américains morts depuis le début du conflit avec l’Iran s’élève désormais à au moins 13.

Question sensible sur l’île pétrolière de Kharg

Interrogé sur la possibilité de prendre le contrôle de l’île de Kharg — un site stratégique du Golfe Persique par lequel transite environ 90 % du pétrole iranien — Donald Trump a refusé de donner des détails lors d’une interview sur Fox News.

Le présentateur Brian Kilmeade lui a demandé :
« Envisagez-vous de prendre l’île de Kharg, par laquelle passe 90 % du pétrole iranien, et quelle est votre position à ce sujet ? »

Trump a répondu :
« Brian, je ne peux pas répondre à une question comme celle-ci. »

Une réponse volontairement vague

Le président américain a poursuivi en expliquant que la question ne devait même pas être posée.

« Vous ne devriez même pas poser cette question. C’est l’une des nombreuses possibilités. Ce n’est pas la principale, mais c’est l’une des nombreuses options, et je peux changer d’avis en quelques secondes », a-t-il déclaré.

Ses propos interviennent alors que les tensions restent élevées entre Washington et Téhéran dans le contexte du conflit en cours au Moyen-Orient.
