Mass evacuations as second cyclone in a week forms off India

Indian authorities on Monday ordered the evacuation of nearly half a million people out of the path of a new cyclone heading towards the east of the country, just a week after another deadly storm smashed into the west coast.

The cyclones are hitting as India reels from a surge in coronavirus infections that has plunged the healthcare system into crisis and pushed the country’s Covid-19 death toll above 300,000.

Experts say storms off India’s coast are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change warms ocean waters.

The India Meteorological Department said Cyclone Yaas had formed in the Bay of Bengal and was expected to barrel into West Bengal and Odisha states on Wednesday.

Yaas could pack gusts of up to 185 kilometres (115 miles) per hour as a « Very Severe Cyclonic Storm » ahead of landfall, the department said.

Storm surges of up to four metres (13 feet) high were « likely to inundate low-lying coastal areas », it added.

Evacuations in coastal districts and the Sundarbans mangrove forest, a UNESCO world heritage site, started on Sunday, West Bengal disaster management minister Javed Ahmed Khan said.

« We have to evacuate nearly half a million people… to schools (and) government offices, which have been turned into cyclone centres to provide shelter to these people, » Khan told AFP.

Odisha’s special relief commissioner, Pradeep Jena, told local media that evacuations were being planned, with the state also making arrangements to provide power back-ups to oxygen plants supplying hospitals treating Covid-19 patients.

Additional oxygen supplies were also being sent to hospitals with virus patients in areas that could be affected by Yaas.

The military and disaster teams have been deployed to help with the preparations and potential rescue operations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday.

In neighbouring Bangladesh, there was « very little chance » that the cyclone would hit the country, Bangladesh Meteorological Department senior forecaster Bazlur Rashid told AFP.

Cyclone Tauktae — India’s first major tropical storm this season — slammed into the western state of Gujarat last Monday, battering several states with torrential downpours and strong winds.

The death toll from Tauktae rose to at least 155 on Monday after more bodies were recovered from an oil rig off the western city of Mumbai and several support vessels, the navy said.

In Sri Lanka, the weather bureau warned the island nation’s fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal.

Trump warns of new U.S. strikes on Iran next week

The president of United States, Donald Trump, said in an interview broadcast Thursday that American forces plan to launch intense attacks on Iranian targets next week, marking what would be the third wave of strikes since the conflict began.

“We’re going to hit them very hard next week,” Trump told Fox News Radio.

The current conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched an offensive that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The strike triggered a broader regional war that has shaken global energy markets and led to missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region.

The escalation has raised concerns among international observers about the potential for further instability in the Middle East and its impact on global oil supplies.

Le Canada enregistre sa plus forte perte d’emplois en quatre ans

Canada a enregistré en février sa plus forte perte d’emplois en quatre ans, avec un taux de chômage atteignant 6,7 %, soit environ 83 900 postes supprimés, selon des données rapportées par Bloomberg.

D’après l’organisme national Statistics Canada, la majorité des pertes concerne des emplois à temps plein dans le secteur privé.

Ce résultat dépasse les prévisions des économistes interrogés par Bloomberg, qui tablaient sur un taux de chômage de 6,6 % et sur la création d’environ 10 000 emplois pour la période.

Depuis le début de l’année 2026, les Canadiens ont déjà perdu plus de 100 000 emplois à temps plein, ce qui souligne le ralentissement du marché du travail.

Pour l’économiste Brendon Bernard, de la plateforme de recherche d’emploi Indeed Canada, les perspectives restent préoccupantes.

« Tout semble aller plutôt mal et nous observons des reculs dans plusieurs secteurs […] Il s’agit d’un rapport assez mauvais », a-t-il déclaré.

Parallèlement, le dollar canadien (CAD) a reculé de 0,4 % face au dollar américain (USD), atteignant un plus bas quotidien de 1,3696 CAD pour 1 USD vendredi matin.

Trump évite de répondre sur une possible prise de l’île iranienne de Kharg

Le président des États-Unis, Donald Trump, a évité de répondre aux questions concernant une éventuelle occupation de l’île de Kharg, après l’annonce du crash d’un avion ravitailleur américain en Irak, qui a coûté la vie à six militaires américains.

Washington a affirmé que l’accident n’était pas dû à un tir ennemi, bien qu’un groupe armé proche de Iran ait revendiqué la responsabilité de l’incident.

Avec ces décès, le bilan des soldats américains morts depuis le début du conflit avec l’Iran s’élève désormais à au moins 13.

Question sensible sur l’île pétrolière de Kharg

Interrogé sur la possibilité de prendre le contrôle de l’île de Kharg — un site stratégique du Golfe Persique par lequel transite environ 90 % du pétrole iranien — Donald Trump a refusé de donner des détails lors d’une interview sur Fox News.

Le présentateur Brian Kilmeade lui a demandé :
« Envisagez-vous de prendre l’île de Kharg, par laquelle passe 90 % du pétrole iranien, et quelle est votre position à ce sujet ? »

Trump a répondu :
« Brian, je ne peux pas répondre à une question comme celle-ci. »

Une réponse volontairement vague

Le président américain a poursuivi en expliquant que la question ne devait même pas être posée.

« Vous ne devriez même pas poser cette question. C’est l’une des nombreuses possibilités. Ce n’est pas la principale, mais c’est l’une des nombreuses options, et je peux changer d’avis en quelques secondes », a-t-il déclaré.

Ses propos interviennent alors que les tensions restent élevées entre Washington et Téhéran dans le contexte du conflit en cours au Moyen-Orient.
