Le président élu du Chili, José Antonio Kast, a mis fin ce mardi (03.03.2026) au processus de transition entamé en décembre avec le président sortant, Gabriel Boric, après la suspension soudaine de la réunion prévue entre les deux dirigeants, sur fond d’accusations croisées de manque de transparence et de supposonges concernant le projet de câble sous-marin entre la Chine et le Chili.

« Nous n’avons pas confiance dans les informations qui nous sont transmises », a déclaré Kast lors d’une conférence de presse convoquée après l’annulation de la dernière réunion de transition entre les deux administrations, qui devait aborder le projet controversé de câble sous-marin.

Le président élu a expliqué que cette décision répond à un processus qui, selon lui, avait commencé « de la meilleure manière », son équipe ayant fait preuve d’une totale disponibilité pour recevoir les informations nécessaires. Toutefois, il a assuré que, au cours des réunions, ils ont constaté un « manque d’information » et un « manque de transparence » dans plusieurs ministères et services publics, où — a-t-il souligné — on leur affirmait que « tout allait bien ».

La rencontre, qui s’est tenue au palais de La Moneda, siège du gouvernement, s’est achevée de façon inattendue après un peu plus de vingt minutes d’échanges.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United Kingdom’s lack of support for the military campaign against Iran is “shocking” and warned that London’s stance is “ruining relations” between the two allies.

During a meeting in the Oval Office with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump criticized what he described as insufficient backing from NATO partners. “Spain has been very, very uncooperative, just like the United Kingdom,” he said, referring to their reluctance to support U.S. strikes against Iran.

“The second one (referring to the United Kingdom) is shocking, but we are not in the era of Winston Churchill,” Trump added. “I will say the United Kingdom has been very, very uncooperative with that stupid island they have, that they gave away and accepted a 100-year lease on, and in doing so they are ruining relations. It’s a shame.”

Trump was referring to Diego Garcia, the largest island in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

The U.S. president has repeatedly criticized the 2025 agreement under which the United Kingdom agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. In exchange, London secured a 99-year lease to continue operating the joint U.K.-U.S. military base on Diego Garcia.

The top U.S. homeland security official faced sharp criticism in Congress over the immigration crackdown carried out under Donald Trump’s administration.

The Republican president had pledged to deport millions of undocumented migrants, a policy overseen by Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

During a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin accused Noem of leading a DHS “without a moral compass or respect for the rule of law.”

Durbin alleged that federal agents had created “chaos” in several cities by detaining individuals based on “the color of their skin, their accent, and their language.”

The DHS secretary appeared before Congress for the first time since federal agents fatally shot Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January during protests against immigration raids.

Durbin criticized Noem for making what he described as “unfounded accusations of terrorism” against Good and Pretti.

Noem offered condolences to their families, denied labeling them as “terrorists,” and said she had only stated that the incident “appeared to be” of that nature.
