Sampaoli leaves Marseille speaking of differences with club bosses

AFP

Argentinian coach Jorge Sampaoli said on Friday he had left Marseille because of differences with the club’s hierarchy after guiding them back to the Champions League

Sampaoli, 62, arrived at the Stade Velodrome in March 2021 and took Marseille to second in Ligue 1 last season.

In May, colourful former Argentina and Sevilla boss Sampaoli, who led Chile to the 2015 Copa America title, said he needed further funds to make the most of competing in Europe’s top tournament.

On Friday, Sampaoli posted on Instagram.

“My rhythm and objectives are not the same that those of the directors of the club,” he wrote.

“There’s no harm in pretending that things are different.

“The last season was incredible. To be coach of this club was a pleasure for me. I was very happy,” he added.

Earlier, Marseille said in a statement it was a mutual agreement said.

“After 16 months of collaboration, this work has allowed the club to take the next step in their new sporting project and qualify directly for the Champions League,” the statement.

“We are happy with the path taken and emotions shared but after a lot of consideration, the two parties, who are acting in the interest of Marseille, agreed to bring this relationship to an end.”

Marseille have signed Spartak Moscow centre-back Samuel Gigot and teenager Isaak Toure, ahead of their first appearance in the competition since 2020, when they won just one group game.

But players have also left.

France defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara has joined Aston Villa on a free transfer. Defender William Saliba has returned to Arsenal after his loan.

Super Bowl shatters viewership records with 123.4 million tuning in for Chiefs’ victory

The Super Bowl last Sunday, where the Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious with a 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers and featured Taylor Swift as a star spectator, achieved a record-breaking audience of 123.4 million viewers, setting a new benchmark for television broadcasts in U.S. history.

This spectacle surpassed the previous record held by last year’s Super Bowl, in which the Chiefs also clinched the title, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles, gathering 115.1 million viewers.

The 2024 Super Bowl ranks just behind the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, which had an estimated viewership of between 125 and 150 million people in the U.S. However, the comparison is somewhat imprecise since the moon landing was broadcast across various networks, whereas the 2024 Super Bowl was exclusively aired on CBS and its affiliated channels and platforms.

Data from Nielsen Fast National and Adobe Analytics, released by the NFL in a statement on Monday, showed that 120 million people watched the game on CBS.

The remaining viewers tuned in through Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports, and NFL+. Notably, the 2.2 million viewers on Univision set a new record for a Super Bowl broadcast on a Spanish-speaking network.
