“A great honor for our country”: Trump congratulates Pope Leo XIV

President Donald Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever pope from the United States, in a message posted Thursday on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has just been named pope. It is a tremendous honor to know he is the first American pope. What a thrill, and what a great honor for our country,” Trump wrote.
“I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a great moment!” he added.
Later, Trump spoke briefly to reporters outside the West Wing about the new pope, who hails from Chicago and also holds Peruvian nationality.
“What greater honor could there be? We’re a bit surprised but very happy,” Trump remarked.
When asked by a reporter whether he regretted posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as pope — which he shared less than a week after attending Pope Francis’s funeral in Rome — Trump ignored the question.
Last week, he jokingly said he would like to succeed Pope Francis: “I’d like to be pope — that would be my number one choice,” he quipped.
During the conclave, the Republican politician had expressed certain preferences and hinted at support for a New York cardinal, presumably Timothy Dolan, whom he described as “very good.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a conservative Catholic, also reacted to the election of the new pontiff.
“The United States looks forward to deepening its enduring relationship with the Holy See under the first American pope,” Rubio said in a statement.
President Trump had a complicated relationship with the previous pope.

Authorities investigate triple homicide of young women in southern Buenos Aires

The bodies of three women, two aged 20 and one 15, were found on the outskirts of Buenos Aires in a case authorities are investigating as a revenge killing linked to drug trafficking, the provincial Security Minister reported on Wednesday.
“Apparently, they were going to attend an event they had been invited to, unaware that it was a trap organized by a transnational drug trafficking group planning to kill them,” said Javier Alonso, Buenos Aires provincial Security Minister, during a press conference.
So far, four people have been arrested for aggravated homicide, including the owner of the house where the bodies were discovered, though Alonso suggested that more individuals may be involved.
Investigators determined that the victims voluntarily got into a vehicle on Friday night and were taken to a house in Florencio Varela, on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires. The vehicle was later found burned near the property where the bodies were discovered in the garden.
While the exact motive is still under investigation, the minister explained that the women had previously encountered members of the criminal organization, and an incident involving them led to this act of revenge. Alonso estimated that the killings occurred the same night the women disappeared, and phone tracking helped reconstruct their movements.
On Tuesday, a small group of people, including neighbors of the victims, gathered at the roundabout where the women were last seen in southern Buenos Aires

Deadly floods in Taiwan: 17 killed, 17 missing after barrier lake bursts in Hualien

The overflow of a barrier lake caused by heavy rains from Typhoon Ragasa left 17 people dead, 32 injured, and 17 missing in Taiwan, according to local authorities.
The barrier lake collapsed on Tuesday afternoon in the eastern district of Hualien. Although the floods triggered by the rupture have since receded, most of the victims—mainly elderly residents—were found in the town of Guangfu. Preliminary reports suggest that a delayed evacuation was the main cause of the fatalities.
As of yesterday, more than 5,000 people had been evacuated from Guangfu, Wanrong, Fenglin, and other areas of Hualien. Around 20 shelters have been set up in the region, currently housing over 700 people, authorities said.
A spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council expressed sorrow over the victims and extended condolences to their families and the injured.
